Midnight Mass – Poem by Arthur Martinson

Conversion and submission:

my only two options.

Genuflecting, kneeling,

showering wet liquid eucharist

into my worshipping mouth.

*

O, chalice of risky wine!

O, grail of possible death!

*

Verse and chorus: “Unholy, Unholy, Unholy.”

*

Tongues in unison,

tongues in confession:

“Bless us our sins.”

*

Marti is a resident of Washington, DC, and had one poem -a syllabic,
rhyming sonnet-published in Riverrun (1993).
